T.O. Fuller State Park

Few people ever stop to realize how much wildlife there truly is left in Memphis compared to many major cities across the United States.  Amongst the shopping malls and drive-through burgers dives, there lies what is left of Memphis, TN’ wild nature – T.O. Fuller State Park.  Located near the Mississippi River, just 11 miles South of downtown Memphis., it is the only state park within Memphis city limits.  Surrounded by mom and pop stores, neighborhoods and roadways, T.O. Fuller is 1,138 acres of mostly forest.  The park was named after Dr. Thomas O. Fuller who had spent his life empowering and educating African Americans during the 1800’s and 1900’s.

The park has a nature trail that runs next to wetland areas and is perfect for bird and reptile/amphibian watching.  The 1 ½ mile trail is located in the day-use area by picnic shelter #3 and is currently being expanded into other areas of the park.

Directions: The park is on Mitchell Road, Exit 9 Mallory Avenue, right onto Riverport Road, then left on Plant Road.  For specific directions, see http://www.mapquest.com
